Sound & Headphone Test checks that your audio output actually works the way it should: press Left and Right to confirm each earcup or speaker plays on the correct side, play reference tones from 60 Hz bass to 15 kHz treble to hear where your gear (or your hearing) rolls off, run a smooth 12-second sweep from 20 Hz to 20 kHz, or play pink noise to compare loudness between two headphones.

Everything is generated with the Web Audio API in your browser — no files, no downloads, no microphone permission, nothing recorded. Use it after plugging in a new headset, before a call, when a Bluetooth earbud seems dead, or to check that a stereo cable is wired correctly.

How to use the Sound & Headphone Test

  1. Set the volume

    Start at 50% and put on your headphones or turn on the speakers.

  2. Check the channels

    Press Left, then Right — each tone should come from one side only. Both plays centred.

  3. Try the tones and sweep

    Play the bass and treble tones, then the 20 Hz–20 kHz sweep to hear the whole range.

  4. Stop

    Press Stop sound at any time.

Frequently asked questions

Is the test free and does it need any permission?
Yes, it is free and it needs no permission at all: it only plays sound, never listens.
I hear the Left tone in both ears — is something wrong?
Usually the output is set to mono. On Windows check Settings → Accessibility → Audio → "Mono audio"; on macOS System Settings → Accessibility → Audio → "Play stereo audio as mono"; on phones look in Accessibility. A mono Bluetooth profile (HFP/HSP during calls) also collapses stereo.
Left and right are swapped — how do I fix it?
Wired: the plug may be in the wrong jack or the cable wired backwards; true stereo swaps are rare in software. Some earbuds are simply worn on the wrong sides. Windows and macOS have no built-in swap; third-party tools like Equalizer APO or SoundSource can swap channels.
I cannot hear the 15 kHz tone — is my hearing bad?
Not necessarily. Most adults stop hearing somewhere between 12 and 17 kHz, and many small speakers and cheap headphones roll off before that too. If 10 kHz is audible you are within a normal range.
What is the 60 Hz tone for?
It exercises the bass driver. Laptop speakers and phone speakers often reproduce it barely or not at all — that is a limitation of the hardware, not a fault.
What is pink noise for?
Pink noise has equal energy per octave, so it sounds "even". Play it while switching between two headphones or two devices to compare their loudness and tonal balance.
Nothing plays at all — what should I check?
System volume and mute, the output device selected in the OS (a monitor or TV over HDMI is a common surprise), the browser tab not muted, and Bluetooth actually connected. Then press a button again — browsers require a click before playing audio.
